The 8.9-meter oculus is permanently open to the sky — no glass, no cover. When it rains, it rains inside. Twenty-two hidden drains in the original floor handle the water. Every April 21st at noon (Rome's birthday), a beam of sunlight hits the entrance doorway exactly — a solar clock engineered 1,900 years ago that still works.
The oculus directly influenced centuries of skylight design. The glass pyramid of the Louvre, modern hotel atriums, and the dome of the US Capitol all owe a direct debt to this 8.9-meter hole open to the sky for 1,900 years.
The oculus functions as a precise astronomical calendar: the path of the sunbeam through the year marks equinoxes and solstices with arc-second accuracy. Modern researchers have confirmed the Pantheon functions simultaneously as a precision sundial and an astronomical observatory.
